Colusa County Hosting Narcan Giveaway Event; Residents Encouraged to Stock First-Aid Kits with Lifes

(COLUSA, CA) October 10, 2024 – In an effort to enhance public health and safety, Colusa County Behavioral Health is hosting a series of Naloxone (Narcan) Giveaway Events spread throughout the county this October.  Deadly fentanyl is showing up in many illicit drugs and pills disguised as prescribed medication, leading to unintentional poisonings and deaths.  When administered correctly, Narcan is a critical tool in reversing the effects of opioid poisonings and overdose, potentially preventing death.  The series of events will be hosted by Colusa County Behavioral Health at the seven branches of the county library system, and Colusa County residents are encouraged to utilize this opportunity to stock their emergency medical kits with this life-saving medication.

"Narcan is safe for all age groups, from infants to the elderly, and should be widely available in every community," said Tony Hobson, Ph. D., Colusa County Behavioral Health Director. "These giveaway events make it easier for families and individuals to add Narcan to their first-aid kits, increasing the chances that lives can be saved in the event of a poisoning or overdose."

Narcan is an over-the-counter nasal spray that reverses an opioid overdose by blocking the effects of opiates on the brain and restoring breathing.  The Narcan distribution events are part of Colusa County's broader strategy to combat the opioid crisis and ensure that all residents are prepared to respond to an emergency.  In addition to receiving free doses of Narcan, attendees will be given brief training on how to properly administer the medication.
